The Power of One: World Classics
Perchance explores the ever broadening idea of “timeless classics” by sharing with you the first 25 performances of artists living and working here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Through their voices we will see and hear stories and plays passed down through the generations from cultures and countries around the world. Some are funny, some are romantic, some are thrilling, and some are instructional - all have captured the imagination of people who have gone before and continue to be passed down through time. Learn what these universal themes reveal to us about being human in The Power of One: World Classics.

Classical work, why do it today? What does it mean and who is it for?
It is the rallying cry of the epic story, those that have stood the test of time and been passed down for centuries. It is the power of universal human themes that span cultures and societies and yet are deeply personal. It is the resonance of an idea, the love of language, and the power of words to strike home deeply.
When the pandemic shut down the world, to try and find a sense of hope and balance we at Perchance took our strengths of artistic excellence in classical outdoor performance and used them to explore our province’s culture and geography through the epic video journey, The Power of One. We paired performers with monologues from each of Shakespeare’s plays (and a sonnet) to take viewers through the pandemic and out the other side while showcasing the scenic beauty of our big and beautiful province.
What resulted was a global phenomenon with Newfoundland and Labrador artists at its centre. What we expected to be 200-300 views per video, astonishingly became 12,000 - 50,000 viewers per video! What we thought was a project to employ artists through the pandemic became a passion project to lead us into the future.
As 2022 opens, join Perchance as we continue to explore the broadening idea of “timeless classics”. Through the voices of this year's performers we will see and hear stories and plays passed down through the generations from cultures and countries around the world. Some are funny, some are romantic, some are thrilling, and some are instructional but all have captured the imagination of people who have gone before and continue to be passed down through time. Stay tuned to learn what these universal themes reveal to us about being human in The Power of One: World Classics.
Our Vision Team, Zainab Jerrett, Azal Dosanjh, and Danielle Irvine, sought out a wide range of diverse performers willing to share their stories with the world.
