CONSIDERATIONS FOR WORKING AT PERCHANCE THEATRE

OPEN POSITION: Production Manager/Technical Director (PMTD
RESPONSIBILITIES
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS
SALARY: $1400.00 weekly
DURATION: 13 weeks (includes 1 week prep/wrap + 11 weeks rehearsals/production)
[Anticipated Start Date: week of June 5, 2023
- Overseeing the entire production team (stage management, designers, productions assistants, etc.) throughout the pre-production/rehearsal/production processes.
- Creating production calendars & tech week schedules for the repertory season in accordance with CAEA Dance Opera Theatre (DOT) Agreement.
- Overseeing departmental budgets and managing expense reporting.
- Leading all set and prop construction and treatments, includes costing, drafting, construction as needed, sourcing materials and making efficient changeover schedules and plans for all shows.
- Managing rentals, returns, storage of equipment for the rehearsal hall and the theatre.
- Hiring support staff as budget allows
- Creating plans for theatre set-up, production install, changeovers and strike.
- Chair production meetings (creating schedule, agendas)
- Acting as site manager for the theatre during the performance season.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS
- Graduate from an accredited post-secondary institution in the field of theatrical production with significant, relevant experience in repertory theatre.
- A thorough and current understanding of set construction techniques, staging principles and production techniques for theatre.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work well in a team.
- Strength in solving interpersonal conflict.
- The ability to remain calm, positive and focused in a high pressure and deadline-based environment.
- First aid training is considered an asset.
- This role will require backstage production work in an outdoor setting, and physical labour will be involved. This could include, but is not limited to, climbing ladders, lifting set pieces, participating in set changeovers, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SALARY: $1050.00 - $1200.00 weekly
DURATION: 12 weeks (includes 1 week prep/wrap + 11 weeks rehearsals/production) [Anticipated Start Date: week of June 5, 2023]
Hiring of PSM dependant on funding
- Overseeing the Stage Management team.
- Scheduling the repertory rehearsal process in communication with the Artistic Director & Directing Team, the Production Manager/Technical Director, and the Stage Management team.
- Stage Managing one production for the summer season while acting as a supporting stage manager for another production(s).
- Being present and responsible for your assigned production during all meetings and throughout the rehearsal, technical and performance process.
- Upholding CAEA [Equity - Dance Opera Theatre (DOT) Agreement] standards and company policies throughout the rehearsal, technical and performance processes.
- Responsible for all written documentation concerning your assigned production. This includes, but is not limited to, creating, maintaining and submitting a well organized prompt book, production notes and show reports.
- Attend regular production meetings.
- Communicate details from the Director of your assigned production to all concerned in a timely manner (through daily rehearsal notes).
- Upholding the artistic integrity of your assigned production throughout the performance period.
- Oversee the preparation and storage of all sets, props, costumes, light and sound for your assigned production during the performance period.
- Supervising technical checks; fight, intimacy and dance calls; and safety walks for your assigned production during the performance period.
- Striking and resetting scenic, costume and technical equipment between performances.
- Operating sound during performances of your assigned production (if required).
- Other duties may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS
- Graduate from an accredited post-secondary institution in the field of theatrical production, or significant relevant experience. Experience working in repertory theatre and/or outdoor theatre is mandatory.

SALARY: $650.00 - $750.00 weekly
DURATION: 12 weeks [Anticipated Start Date: week of June 5, 2023]
- Acting as the assistant stage manager for all productions during the 2023 season (involves attending rehearsals in support of the Stage Management team, managing backstage track during performances, assisting the Stage Management team and performers as needed, tracking props and costumes, creating running paperwork, working with Production Assistants, etc.)
- Striking and resetting scenic and technical equipment between performances, assisting with changeovers.
- Laundering costume items.
- Any other duties assigned by the Production Manager/Technical Director or the Stage Management team.

RESPONSIBILITIES
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS
SALARY: $650.00 - $700.00 weekly
DURATION: 10 weeks [Anticipated Start Date: week of June 19, 2023]
- This role will require standard backstage production work in an outdoor setting, and primarily physical labour will be involved. This could include, but is not limited to, climbing ladders, lifting set pieces, participating in set changeovers, with the physical ability to withstand prolonged walking, standing, bending, pushing, stooping and kneeling without restrictions
- Assist carpenters with scenery build and installation of stage scenery
- Construct, paint and maintain set pieces, move and rearrange furniture
- Assemble and set up backdrops, scenery and set pieces for rehearsals and productions
- Assemble, dismantle, and store scenery, set pieces and props
- Ensure props are affixed properly as instructed by supervisors
- Disassemble sets
- Any other duties assigned by the Technical Director or the Production Stage Manager.
- Laundering some costume items (if required).
- Directing patrons to parking (if required).
- Ushering patrons and distributing programs (if required).

OPEN POSITION: Set Designer (SD)
Perchance Theatre is searching for a skilled, self-motivated set designer to join our production team as we build an exciting outdoor theatre experience. The set designer’s responsibilities include analyzing scripts and collaborating with the director, researching historical and architectural details, working with PMTD to provide cost and time estimates, and ensure all sets meet safety standards. You should be able to collaborate with different creative teams and stay motivated while working long hours. Set Designer will be responsible for set design for two shows in rep in an outdoor theatre environment.
To be successful as a set designer, you should be able to delegate tasks, make decisions under pressure, and provide clear instructions. Outstanding candidates have a keen eye for detail, strong creative vision, and the ability to maturely process criticism.

Set Designer Responsibilities:
- Understanding scripts and production specifications and collaborating with the director to design the layout and look of the set using pencil sketches and software.
- Liaising with the costume, prop, make-up to confirm set details.
- Working with PMTD to ensure the timely ordering of required materials for the set.
- Researching historical, architectural, and cultural details and incorporating these into the set.
- Work with PMTD on set construction.
- Selecting set decoration and props to be used on set.
- Producing models for the director’s approval and implementing changes as required.
- Working with PMTD to provide cost estimates and negotiating with vendors to secure the best deals.
- Inspecting stage entrances and exits to ensure the set is positioned correctly, and also performing quality assurance on all aspects of the set.
- Working with PMTD to brief crew and actors on set safety and also explaining how the set operates.
Set Designer Requirements:
- An art-based degree or similar.
- A completed apprenticeship may be acceptable.
- Additional courses in Theatre, Performing Arts, or Design is a plus.
- Knowledge of 3D design, architecture, or interior design would be advantageous.
- Excellent creative intelligence and time management skills.
- A good eye for detail and the ability to generate many ideas.
- Deadline-driven and committed.
