PERCHANCE THEATRE'S 2024 SEASON
Making innovative, immersive outdoor theatre with sails covering the audience all nestled next to the ocean – that is what the team at Perchance Theatre do. Just 45 minutes outside the capital city of St. John’s NL, you will find us making our unique, award-winning, brand of theatre magic. Classics are our main focus, with new works and visiting guest performers, rounding out our beloved summer festival. We are looking for people who love making excellent ensemble theatre, and who love the outdoors, to join our team of passionate professionals.
Our theatre hires following the DOT Tier One from CAEA. Our work is created with a focus on the outdoor environment and live creation and as such we have extremely basic lighting, and do mostly live sound/music scapes. Our technical needs focus more on set and props and always creating with an eye to responsible environmental practices. Where possible we reuse and recycle existing theatre elements to minimize our impact.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR WORKING AT PERCHANCE THEATRE

OPEN POSITION: Production Manager
Perchance Theatre seeks a Production Manager to join us. The ideal candidate will be a proactive, talented, flexible, individual with a deep love of making theatre magic, especially in unique environments.
Reporting to, and working closely with, the Artistic Producer, the successful candidate will be overseeing all production aspects from conception to completion of the 2024 summer repertory season. Starting on a part time basis, and becoming full time during the summer, this position can begin remotely if needed.
Also on the management team will be an office administrator who will work closely with the PM on budget and expenditure tracking.
RESPONSIBILITIES
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS
SALARY: $1300-1400.00 weekly
DURATION: 18-21 weeks tbd [Anticipated Start Date: week of April 1st]. It starts with part time work and becomes full time in May.
Reporting to, and working closely with, the Artistic Producer, the successful candidate will be overseeing all production aspects from conception to completion of the 2024 summer repertory season. Starting on a part time basis, and becoming full time during the summer, this position can begin remotely if needed.
Also on the management team will be an office administrator who will work closely with the PM on budget and expenditure tracking.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Overseeing the production team (crew, designers, productions assistants, etc.) throughout the pre-production/rehearsal/production processes.
- Work with AP on hiring of staff
- Contract staff in conjunction with AP and Office Administration
- Creating production calendars & working with TD to make tech week schedules for the repertory season in accordance with CAEA Dance Opera Theatre (DOT) Agreement.
- Work both indoors and outdoors in Conception Harbour, NL
- Overseeing departmental budgets to make sure all departments work within budget
- Overseeing all departments to make sure rehearsals and design/construction is going on time and on budget.
- Oversight of rentals, returns, storage of equipment for the rehearsal hall and the theatre.
- Attend all production, company and staff meetings, dress rehearsals for each production, and participate in the planning and coordination of all production week activities.
- Chair production meetings (creating schedule, agendas, and taking minutes).
- Acting as site manager for the theatre during the performance season, maintaining the venue and assisting all departments as needed.
- Working with Box Office, Technical team, and Stage Management to ensure flow of shows, change over times, etc with events/performances.
- Other duties to be discussed in interviews.
- Ensure that health and safety policies and procedures are met. Review all relevant health and safety policies before any work is done, and bring any necessary changes or updates to the attention of the Artistic Producer and Office Administrator on a timely basis.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS
- Graduate from an accredited post secondary institution in the field of theatrical production, or relevant experience.
- A thorough and current understanding theatre management, festival management considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

- Comfort working on both A frame and Extension ladders

OPEN POSITION: Technical Director (TD)
Perchance Theatre seeks a Technical Director to join us. The ideal candidate will be a proactive, talented, flexible, individual with a deep love of making theatre magic, especially in unique environments.
Reporting to, and working closely with, the Artistic Producer and Production Manager, the successful candidate will be overseeing all technical aspects of the season from conception to opening of the 2024 summer repertory season. Starting on a part time basis, and becoming full time close to the start of rehearsals, this position can begin remotely if needed.

Reporting to, and working closely with, the Artistic Producer and Production Manager, the successful candidate will be overseeing all technical aspects of the season from conception to opening of the 2024 summer repertory season. Starting on a part time basis, and becoming full time close to the start of rehearsals, this position can begin remotely if needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Cost and conceptualize the execution of all set/prop design submissions throughout the approval process and create a detailed costing analysis of each prior to approval.
- Consult on tech week schedules with the PM, for the repertory season in accordance with CAEA Dance Opera Theatre (DOT) Agreement.

- Overseeing production budgets to make sure all design/tech departments work within budget
- Managing set construction and treatments (includes costing, drafting, construction as needed, and sourcing materials and space).
- Managing rentals, returns, storage of equipment for the rehearsal hall and the theatre.
- Coordinate, supervise, and participate in production install, changeovers and strike.
- Attend all production, company and staff meetings, dress rehearsals for each production, and participate in the planning, coordination and execution of all production week activities with the PM.
- Acting as site manager for the theatre during the pre-production/ rehearsal period, maintaining the venue and assisting all departments as needed.

Perchance Theatre seeks a Production Stage Manager to join us. The ideal candidate will be a proactive, talented, flexible, individual with a deep love of making theatre magic, especially in unique environments.
A key member of the management team of the festival, the PSM will be working closely with the PM, the TD, the Artistic Producer, and the Office Administrator in upholding a professional, efficient, respectful, and enjoyable work environment. They will be stage managing one festival production/series, and scheduling for all of the productions/series that are happening in our two venues.

A key member of the management team of the festival, the PSM will be working closely with the PM, the TD, the Artistic Producer, and the Office Administrator in upholding a professional, efficient, respectful, and enjoyable work environment. They will be stage managing one festival production/series, and scheduling for all of the productions/series that are happening in our two venues.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Overseeing the Stage Management team which will include 2 other stage managers and at least one assistant or apprentice stage manager. Mentoring will be part of this position.
- Scheduling the repertory rehearsal process in communication with the Artistic Director & Director Team, the Production Manager/Technical Director, and the Stage Management team.
- Stage Managing one production for the summer season while acting as a supporting stage manager for another production(s).
- Being present and responsible for your assigned production during all meetings and throughout the rehearsal, technical and performance process.
- Upholding CAEA [Equity - Dance Opera Theatre (DOT) Agreement] standards and company policies throughout the rehearsal, technical and performance processes.
- Responsible for all written documentation concerning your assigned production. This includes, but is not limited to, creating, maintaining and submitting a well organized prompt book, production notes and show reports.
- Attend regular production meetings.
- Communicate details from the Director of your assigned production to all concerned in a timely manner (through daily rehearsal notes).
- Upholding the artistic integrity of your assigned production throughout the performance period.
- Oversee the preparation and storage of all sets, props, costumes, light and sound for your assigned production during the performance period.
- Supervising technical checks; fight, intimacy and dance calls; and safety walks for your assigned production during the performance period.
- Overseeing the striking and resetting of scenic, costume and technical equipment between performances.
- Operating sound during performances of your assigned production (if required).
- Other duties may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS
- Graduate from an accredited post-secondary institution in the field of theatrical production, or significant relevant experience. Experience working in repertory theatre and/or outdoor theatre is mandatory.
- A strong understanding of the job of stage management in a festival environment.

- Acting as the assistant stage manager for assigned productions during the 2024 season (involves attending rehearsals in support of the Stage Management team, managing backstage track during performances, assisting the Stage Management team and performers as needed, tracking props and costumes, creating running paperwork, working with Production Assistants, etc.)
- Striking and resetting scenic and technical equipment between performances, assisting with changeovers.
- Laundering costume items.
- Any other duties assigned by the Management team.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- This role will require standard backstage production work in an outdoor setting, and primarily e physical labour may be involved. This could include, but is not limited to, climbing ladders, lifting set pieces, participating in set changeovers, with the physical ability to withstand prolonged walking, standing, bending, pushing, stooping and kneeling without restrictions
- Assist carpenters with scenery build and installation of stage scenery
- Construct, paint and maintain set pieces, move and rearrange furniture
- Assemble and set up backdrops, scenery and set pieces for rehearsals and productions
- Assemble, dismantle, and store scenery, set pieces and props
- Ensure props are affixed properly as instructed by supervisors
- Disassemble sets
- Any other duties assigned by the Management Team.
